GTA 6’s release date is set to release on May 26, 2026.
Rockstar confirmed the release date in a post on Twitter, which pushes GTA 6’s expected launch back from the previous Fall 2025 launch window – which was revealed in a Take-Two financial report back in May 2024.
In the release date announcement post, Rockstar Games states: “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
Rumors of a potential delay had been circling for some time ahead of the above announcement, with lots of speculation doing the rounds since the vague 2025 window was revealed in 2024. It was first sparked when Rockstar moved all of its employees back to full-time in-office work five days a week, which multiple of its developers have expressed concern about, particularly when it comes to the potential effects on the sequel.
What will be in GTA 6?
The latest trailer gave us some new details of what we can expect from the state of Leonida where the upcoming adventure is set.
It also teased some storylines when it comes to dual protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval.
It shows the pair working together to find a new beginning in the city, and we see Jason go to collect Lucia from prison, followed by several action shots of them both getting caught up in all sorts of mishaps.
The description states that the “deck is stacked against them when an easy score goes wrong”, which leads them to “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy” that’s said to stretch “across the state”.
What other characters could we see?
From the trailers it is clear we could see whole host of other faces including one named Cal Hampton – said to be Jason’s friend who is known for “snooping on Coast guard comms”.
Other characters include:
- Boobie Ike – A businessman with an empire made up of a strip club, a recording studio, and some prime Vice City estate.
- Dre’Quan Priest – An aspiring musician recently signed under Real Dimez who’s connected to Boobie’s strip club
- Bae-Luxe and Roxy – also known as Real Dimez, Bae-Luxe and Roxy are two friends who’s bond stretches back to high school. Known for their strong social media presence and rap tracks, the pair are signed under Only Raw Records.
- Raul Bautista – Known for this cunning charm, Raul is an experienced bank robber looking out for new talent.
- Brian Heder – An older man with a history of drug running “from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys.”
What platform will it be available on?
So far, it has been confirmed by the manufacturers that the game will arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S when it arrives in 2026.
Take Two said a statement: “GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems”.
So far, there has been no noise about whether it will be available on PS5 Pro.
There’s currently no mention of a PC launch, which might suggest it will follow a similar path to the other GTA games and be released on consoles first before arriving on PC later.
Where will the game be set?
GTA 6 is taking us back to Vice City, a fictional region based on Florida and a game in which Rockstar had huge success in 2002 and is set to be a modern-day take on what the area looks like.
Rockstar revealed we’ll be heading to the state of Leonida, which is “home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond”.
From the second trailer we were given postcard snapshots of some areas, set to feature including the the touristy area of Leonida Keys, Mount Kalaga National Park, Port Gellhorn, the home of cheap motels and strip clubs and the industrial areas of Ambrosia home to a biker gang.
GTA 6 Trailer 2
GTA 6 trailer 2 gives us another look at the state of Leonida, where the upcoming adventure will be taking place, along with some exciting story hints that build on what’s been revealed previously. As dual protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval work together to find a new beginning in the city, we see Jason go to collect Lucia from prison, followed by several action shots of them both getting caught up in various hijinks. It’s certainly giving off some Bonnie and Clyde vibes all over again.
GTA 6 trailer 2’s description also mentions that the “deck is stacked against them when an easy score goes wrong”, which leads them to “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy” that’s said to stretch “across the state”. It sounds like we’re about to get wrapped up some dangerous situations that’ll force the pair to rely on each other.
Where Is GTA 6 Set? Vice City Returns — But It’s Just the Beginning
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, its fictional take on Florida, with the iconic Vice City making a bold return as the game’s central hub. This time, the city has been reimagined with a modern twist — still flashy and vibrant, but grounded in today’s culture.
Expect to see more than just neon lights and beachfronts. The updated Vice City now features pastel-colored hotels, buzzing strip clubs, viral social media clips, and packed streets filled with local businesses. Familiar areas like Ocean Beach, Little Haiti, and the Tisha-Wocka flea market are all part of the expanded city, alongside key landmarks like the VCI airport and Port VC.
But GTA 6 isn’t stopping at Vice City. The surrounding state of Leonida brings a vast world to explore:
- Leonida Keys – a scenic chain of tropical islands
- Grassrivers – a dense, swampy wilderness
- Port Gellhorn – a rundown coastal town with gritty charm
- Ambrosia – a rough town ruled by a sugar refinery and biker gang
- Mount Kalaga – a mountainous region up north, hinting at rural gameplay
There’s even buzz about a region called Gloriana, possibly inspired by Georgia, suggesting the game could stretch beyond Florida’s borders — making GTA 6 one of the most ambitious and sprawling maps in the franchise’s history.
Will GTA 6 be on PS4 and Xbox One?
As revealed in the official press release, GTA 6 is currently only slated to arrive on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and won’t be coming to PS4 or Xbox One when it launches in 2026 – making it a current-gen exclusive.
